Don’t Be Fooled

The headline read GOP’s Midterm Bet: Voters will care more about inflation than abortion.

Here’s a fact, voters: If you believe that a female, regardless of age or circumstances, has no choice but to give birth, who doesn’t even have the right to a pill she can take after one missed period, you are in the minority, but the headline might be true for you.

Here’s another fact: Inflation that is caused by a pandemic, supply chain issues, a war in Ukraine that is disrupting wheat supplies around the world, and oil companies refusing to ramp up production, will happen regardless of who you vote for in the midterms.

If you are voting against inflation instead of a woman’s right to control her own body, inflation will still happen even as women and families lose their rights.

If you are OK with women losing their rights, are you deaf to the argument that most families in this country are better off with Democratic economics?

Tax cuts for the wealthy do not trickle down to the middle classes in a good way. Cutting corporate taxes don’t equal higher wages, you know, those wages that are now being blamed for inflation. It does trickle down in reduced funds for education, healthcare, and other programs that benefit the general public, especially the most vulnerable among us. One lawmaker has even proposed ending all government programs, including Social Security and Medicare, after five years unless lawmakers vote to extend it for another five.

Seniors, think about the fight over extending the debt ceiling, with one side willing to break the promise that the U.S. will pay the bills they’ve already incurred. We’ve seen this fight used as a campaign tool, and we’ve seen it shut down the government. Now, imagine that fight is over your Social Security.

If you aren’t a senior, but someone who has paid into the system for 20 years, think about what you might lose.

A woman’s right to choose and a worker’s right to retire with dignity might both be on the line with this election. Inflation, however, will happen regardless of who earns your vote. Think about that, and don’t be fooled by the messengers who are betting that you will be.

The Observer carries on the "give 'em hell" tradition of its founder, the late Frosty Troy. I read it from cover to cover. A progressive wouldn't be able to live in a red state without it.
