Pure Hooey

on

I’m missing something here. The Republican Party has long been for a “lock ‘em up and throw away the key” approach to lawbreaking in America. But last week, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Co. decided to spend the day in the DC pokey with a bunch of the “tourists” who broke into, tore up and desecrated the nation’s Capitol for the first time since the British, during the War of 1812, burned the place.

We were at war with those blokes at the time, so during wartime things like that happen. The 1,000 or so “patriots” already convicted or awaiting trial for their actions in 2021 were Trump supporters who didn’t like the outcome of the November 2020 when he lost.

Well, I didn’t like it when he won in 2016 so I complained about it, wrote about it, spoke against it, remain mad about it but I never broke any law over it.

This is where some readers may say, so what if publicity hound Marjorie and others have tried to re-write the documented history of what happened that infamous day, Jan. 6, 2021?

Here’s the “so-what” answer: Broadly speaking over 60% of Republicans still cling to the mythology the presidential election was stolen, that the Biden Administration is a fraud, and that the thugs, insurrectionists, Proud Boys and other lawbreakers rampaging in and on the Capitol grounds and building were there as brave defenders of our beloved democracy.

That’s pure hooey.

They were there at the direction of the biggest loser in American history, Donald John Trump, and with the intent to stop the peaceful, legal transfer of power to the next presidency, just as has occurred in every American election since 1800.

The rioters that rioted are now facing the consequences of their actions. Many have already gone to trial, been convicted and are serving their sentences. None have been found innocent of all charges against them.

Others, like the crowd of crooks, clowns and conspirators Greene and her colleagues hugged, back-slapped and otherwise treated like oppressed political prisoners, await their fates in our American judicial system – just as they should.

As for me, I still believe the good folks of Georgia have the right to elect, and indeed re-elect, Goofy Greene as their representative in the Congress. And, yes, the Constitution gives all of us great leeway in choosing wisely, or otherwise, those who speak for us in the hallowed hallways and beloved chambers at the Capitol.

But I also reserve the right, under the First Amendment, to say, by voice, printed word or recorded video the following: Is Greene really the best you guys have to offer?

I guess since it is the same crowd of Georgians who also tried to turn a world-class footballer, Herschel Walker, into a United States senator, miracles, even bad ones, can and do happen, but even miracles have limitations and for that I am miraculously thankful this morning.

Walker no. Greene yes. How about another miracle in 2024? Greene no, too.

The Observer carries on the "give 'em hell" tradition of its founder, the late Frosty Troy. I read it from cover to cover. A progressive wouldn't be able to live in a red state without it.
