Talking Out Of Both Sides Of His Mouth

on

BY DARLA REYNOLDS SPARKS

My soul is saddened. Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn is opposed to President Obama’s health plan.

Obama hasn’t put forth a health plan yet. The health plans, Dr. Coburn, are still in committees. The opposition is a bit premature and I’m confused about your opposition to a government plan – especially since you are covered by one as a senator. A very fine coverage plan I might remind you.

But, alas, you do not wish to “burden” our government resources by furnishing coverage for children who were born in less fortunate circumstances than senators.

Back here in Oklahoma I think there is a saying about talking out of both sides of your mouth at the same time. If it fits …

Could it also be that you are concerned for yourself and any reduction in your medical care fees? That’s unfortunate since you have retirement plans from more than one government service role, not to mention a lucrative medical practice with further income from investments in your medical field’s various public stocks.

I grant you that a physician has the right to be successful. I’ll grant you that a government employee has a right to be paid. What I can’t wrap my head around is why you don’t wish to have medical coverage for every man, woman and child in these United States of America. Obviously, the rest of the governments of the civilized world disagree with you, senator.

The fact that you insist it is “socialized” medicine – when you are participating in that medical coverage furnished by our government – boggles my mind. Of course, with that reasoning, our fire protection is socialized; various types of police protection are socialized, our airlines; our highway systems; water works; electric grid. All these things would not be possible without some infusion of government monies that you do not wish to spend on treating illnesses except for those who can BUY.

Shame!

The Observer carries on the "give 'em hell" tradition of its founder, the late Frosty Troy. I read it from cover to cover. A progressive wouldn't be able to live in a red state without it.
