Because the people who benefitted from the demotion of the middle class have kept the legend alive, there are plenty who still believe Ronald Reagan was a good president. He wasn’t. His policies hurt the working poor, the middle class, and minorities.
A friend, a good woman who turned out to be a real disappointment in the Legislature, told me, “It’s getting crazy [in the Republican Party.]” She added that she would like to see some good Reagan Republicans running for office.
“I’d prefer some Eisenhower Republicans,” I told her.
What I’d really like to see is Hillary Clinton joining forces with Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and a progressive Senate.
Listen, folks, actors who can make you believe that their awful ideas are just the thing to bring back your jobs, save you from brown people, and usher in a golden age are just that, actors.
Another word is demagogue. According to the dictionary, a demagogue is a political leader who seeks support by appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than by using rational argument.
Repeat after me:
We don’t vote for demagogues.
We don’t vote for demagogues.
We don’t vote for demagogues.
