God And Evolution

BY NATHANIEL BATCHELDER

Oklahoma State Sen. Josh Brecheen, R-Coalgate, announced in the Durant Daily Democrat that he will introduce a bill calling for fair presentation of the scriptural version of creation in science classes that teach evolution: http://www.durantdemocrat.com/view/full_story/10717736/article-Brecheen-discusses-evolution-and-Darwinian-Theory?instance=secondary_opinion_left_column

God created everything. The purpose of science is to describe what God has created. Galileo was convicted of heresy by the Catholic Church 400 years ago for describing observations indicating that the earth revolved around the sun [and not vice versa, as suggested by scriptures]. A correct understanding of our solar system did not disprove God, and neither does evolution.

State Sen. Josh Brecheen is simply ignorant of the libraries full of scientific studies all supporting evolution. Every branch of scientific research supports evolution, and no scientific pursuit disputes evolution. The quibbling with detail comes only from those holding literal beliefs in the Book of Genesis, never intended to be a scientific description of the world.

Does Sen. Brecheen say God could NOT have created life on earth using evolution, if that’s what God chose to do?

If Brecheen introduces his bill calling for equal consideration of scriptural stories in science classes, Oklahoma will make national news again as a state proud to be governed by unschooled ignorant hayseeds.

Don’t do it, Josh, it’s bad for business.

My daughter is a graduate of Coalgate High School, as are all my kids, and she was personally deeply offended and disgusted by Mr. Brecheen’s remarks that all girls at CHS are lesbians and while at school had to be escorted back and forth to the restrooms to prevent incidents, etc.
While not in the linked article, Mr. Brecheen is also known to have said, not surprisingly, that all CHS football players were on steroids.
His beliefs about these two topics apparently are grounded upon faith instead of science. There is no supporting data that would indicate a reduction in Coal County’s birth rate implicit in widespread lesbianism; on the contrary, there was an increase in the birth rate during and immediately after Mr. Brecheen’s tenure at Coalgate HS. Must have been a whole lot of immaculate conceptions, if Mr. Brecheen is to be believed.
Likewise, no adverse health effects among Coalgate athletes have been noted by Law Enforcement, the medical community or school adminstrators that could be explained by widespread steroid usage. Nothing! Nada!
I know of no reasonable explanation as to why Mr. Brecheen would be so derogatory towards his peers, his school and his background. Well, on second thought, maybe I do. It’s all politics. Mr. Brecheen long ago sold his soul to the devil to get ahead in the world of politics.

The Observer carries on the "give 'em hell" tradition of its founder, the late Frosty Troy. I read it from cover to cover. A progressive wouldn't be able to live in a red state without it.
