What could possibly be wrong with abolishing special education and college preparation programs and have a fool of a fake wrestling executive in charge of doing it?
Why, not a thing, of course, except those ignorant, short-sighted and cold-blooded actions are destructive to the future of hundreds of thousands of American youngsters.
And, yes. I can hear the chorus of voices saying these steps are exactly what Donald Trump promised; people knew it and, therefore, like a former gubernatorial candidate in Texas who once counseled rape victims to just sit back and enjoy it, those of us who believe in public education should do the same.
Nope. Millions of educators have committed their lives to the children of our country, and they know, even if Linda McMahon does not, the damage such moronic decisions by the Trump Administration are doing and will be doing for generations to come.
Some may think the following example is too extreme. I think not. Germany in the 1930s began their purges of elements in their society by first identifying mentally retarded individuals, killed most of them and then moved on to union members, communists, intellectuals all before they even got around to exterminating 95% of Europe’s Jews.
Sound familiar?
Higher education also is a favorite to demagogue, defund and denigrate, notwithstanding that it has long been the role model of excellence for the world.
Banks and lawyers? Similar targets in Germany nearly 100 years ago and most folded under the threat of even worse consequences if they didn’t.
Here is the simple truth. Our Congress is feckless at least; the Supreme Court is anything but and major business and corporate interests have put their bottom lines ahead of an idea called democracy, small ‘d’.
So what is left? You and me.
No Kings Day is coming to America on Oct. 18 somewhere near your home, business, school or church. I will be at one near me.
I know that is a tiny gesture in a world upside down, but it is what I can do, will do and continue to do until this nightmarish attack on our freedoms pass into the dustbin of history … and it will.
