There were no government shutdowns during the Biden administration. You know why? He negotiated with the Republicans.
House Speaker Mike Johnson keeps asking Democrats to just vote for the Continuing Resolution, and then they will talk about restoring the ACA subsidies. You know why they can’t? The current occupant of the White House, or what’s left of it, can’t be trusted to keep his word. And Johnson will bend to the president’s will.
Self-employed people and low-wage workers whose companies don’t provide health insurance are going to find themselves in an impossible situation. Who can afford a 30% hike in insurance premiums? How many people will find themselves uninsured?
People are going to go hungry. These are real people, grandmothers, part-time workers, single parents, and, according to a USA Today article, almost 15 million children.
Some governors are looking for money to fund SNAP at the state level, knowing that this money will not be repaid by the federal government when the shutdown ends.
Right now, it’s up to us to do what we can. Don’t have much? A few cans of soup might seem like treasure to a single parent. Food banks can use extra donations, and maybe some hands-on help. Schools can start can drives. If you don’t have funds to share, check your cabinets for items you can donate. Help stock your church’s food pantry and donate to the school backpack programs that send food packs home with kids facing hunger over the weekends and holidays. There will be even more of them now.
Give what you can afford to give. A little bit of help by a whole lot of people may be all we have. Let’s use that collective power to get through this. And let’s continue to stand with the legislators who are standing with the people.

Hunger is literally being used as a weapon. This is nothing more than eugenics in action. This is nothing new to America sadly. We should never accept that we pick up the slack when our government is using our money to harm and destroy us. We need a general strike which will take a while to organize. At least the Democratic states that pay more than they get back just withhold their payments aka states rights. What the government is doing is not promoting the general welfare, but destroying first the sick, disabled and the poor.
